The national summer camp of the Finnish Amateur Radio League will be held this year at Hankasalmi, from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 July. The 59 th camp is named AURORA ‘16 and it gathers together several hundred communications- and technology-oriented individuals and their families.

AURORA ‘16 is organized by the Amateur Radio Club of Central Finland, OH6AD. The camp site is a resort called Revontuli, located along the highway 9. There is a camp/caravan site, hotel, and a few cottages for rent. The programme consists of eg. talks, workshops, working, and for the interested, golf.

Amateur radio operators (“hams”) use their radio equipment to make direct contacts to other operators everywhere in the world. An essential part of the activity is learning and experimenting with the radio technology, and building one’s own equipment. In Finland there are over 5000 ham radio operators and the American Radio Relay League estimates the worldwide count of hams to be about 2.5 million.
